Learn how to customize QR code colors without breaking scannability. Contrast rules, gradient tips, and frame color matching.

QR codes don’t have to be boring black and white. With the right color choices, you can create branded codes that scan perfectly — and look stunning.
The Golden Rule: Contrast
QR scanners need a clear difference between dark modules (dots) and the light background. Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4:1.
Safe combinations:
- Black on white ✓
- Navy on cream ✓
- Dark green on white ✓
- Brand dark color on white ✓
Risky combinations:
- Yellow on white ✗
- Light gray on white ✗
- Red on black ✗ (some scanners fail)
Using Our Color Customization Tools
In the Shape tab of our generator:
- Set background color to white or a very light brand tint
- Set shape color to your brand’s darkest color
- Enable gradient for a modern two-tone effect
- Match frame color to your brand palette
- Enable transparent background for overlaying on colored materials
Frame Color Coordination
Your frame color can differ from QR dot color. Many brands use a colored frame with a standard black-on-white QR inside for maximum reliability.
Testing Is Non-Negotiable
Always scan your colored QR code with multiple devices before printing hundreds of copies. What looks fine to the eye may fail on certain camera sensors.
